FIRST PART
‘Blackwater’ and ‘Erynis’, two best-known world companies in the sphere of security,
have concluded an agreement with a Serbian private firm that organizes training of the
specialists. Many of those who attended this course have already found a job in Iraq.
Not far away from the Town of Obrenovac, 30 kilometers south of Belgrade, at a secret
polygon with shooting permanently ringing around, about ten of former Serbian
commandos are preparing themselves for temporary work in Iraq. The torments they are
experiencing today at this hidden army-
what is waiting for them at tasks that the two most powerful world companies dealing
with security in all locations in the world are going to take them to.
The agents of American ‘Blackwater’ and British ‘Erynis’ have concluded agreement
with a Serbian private firm thus picking up Serbia as new location from which they can
get cheaper but exceptionally trained and experienced labor. The demand for security
jobs in Iraq is exceptionally huge, and our people have what the Britons and Americans,
former SAS agents and marines are lacking – many years of war experience. The man of
the training center whom we talked to and who will be named Nenad /his real identity
known to ‘Blic’/, explains in what way foreign agencies are getting necessary staff from
Serbia.
‘These companies forward me a request specifying the number of people they need and
asking me to choose them and carry out their training. Sometimes they send already set
up teams for a specific training’, Nenad explains.
He is former high officer of the Special Anti-Terrorist Units and at a time highly ranked
member of the State Security. In his official C.V. there is written that he has completed
military training in USA, Israel and Russia and that he is an expert in combat skills and
arms manipulation, that he was dealing with parachute jumping and professional
diving…
Opening of the Camp
He got the idea about opening of the training center near Obrenovac a year ago when he
and his colleague from Bosnia whom we shall call Gabriel /real identity known to ‘Blic’/,
took part in an international competition in practical shooting. Gabriel is also a man with
huge military experience. He worked for five years in Bosnia and the Balkans on various
projects to American Government within teams for diplomatic security and fight against terrorism. It was then when he started wishing to convey his knowledge to others.
Initially, a training center was planned to be set up in Bosnia. That idea was, however,
given up because of strict laws on weapons possession and use, even for training
purposes. A polygon about thirty kilometers southwest of Belgrade was found to be an
ideal location for the training center.
Gabriel has been in Iraq with short interruptions for four years already. He is in contact
with people who came to that country after training in Serbia. He is engaged by one
international private company and is in charge for security of high officers of USA Armypolice training are a children’s game compared toand Navy and civil officials. He does not hide to earn well, but also claims that money is
not the main motif for him for doing this job.
Job Not Guaranteed
Courses near Obrenovac for training of people planning to go to Iraq, last five days on
average and begin on Sundays. There is every day intensive work of six hours, three for
exercises at the nearby polygon and three for exercises at a sports gym. Courses are
usually organized for groups from eight to ten men. The lodging for all those who
enrolled in a course is provided in Obrenovac and is pretty luxurious one. Men attending
the course have air-conditioned rooms, satellite television, Internet connection and also
three meals a day. The cost of the training varies but is about 1,300 Euros on average.
Still, that is a matter of agreement.
Those leading the training center point out that they are not an agency or a company
offering mediating services or finding a job for people intending to deal with security
work. Majority of people attending the training course is coming in the first place hoping to get automatically a job at crisis locations after completion of training and getting of a certificate.
Their clients are mainly professionals who already have a job in the sphere of protection
and security and who are coming for advanced training. Considerable number of
foreigners, especially those from ex Yugoslavia, is among those attending the course.
Nenad points out that getting of this job requires not only specific training but meeting
very demanding criteria as well.
We Are Not Hired Murderers
‘This is not a Rambo-maniac-game. This is a serious business for which you got to have
an irreproachably clean past. Large and serious companies that we are working for, shall
not take anybody with criminal file or punished by law’, he says.
It is almost impossible to find out the number of people from Serbia engaged in security
jobs in Iraq, but some assessments indicate that there are a thousand of them. Serbia and
Montenegro Embassy does not have data as to how many of our people are engaged in
these dangerous tasks since they are coming to Iraq via numerous security agencies.
‘Mere sitting in Baghdad is dangerous. In this town each month about a thousand of
people are killed. Then you can only imagine how dangerous it is when you are in the
open, in the filed, at naphtha wells or in securing of a convoy’, Nino Brajevic, SCG
Ambassador in Baghdad says.
For Gabriel the most important thing is that people realize that those who are going to
Iraq are not going there to kill.
‘People should be explained that we are not hired murderers, maniacs and rapists as we
are being described by some media. We are not going around killing innocent people’,
Gabriel says.
BOX 1:
Guri, too, in the Middle East Business
After making a calculation, ASIS, one of the biggest American companies concluded it
could earn well by hiring former Serbian commandos. As early as last year, ASIS director
This man from Texas was inquiring about possibilities to conclude with our official
institutions an agreement on training and sending of our people with war experience to
Iraq. He was told that such agreement was legally impossible to conclude with any of the
state institutions in Serbia, but that the private agencies were open for business.
‘Thus ASIS concluded deal with Goran Radosavljevic Guri, former commander of the
special anti-terrorist units’, our source claims.
Guri is owner of a joint German-Serbian company called ‘Sectracon’ with head office in
Alzenau, Germany. The firm has been founded within ‘Max Ekom’ company and is
dealing with protection of people in the whole world. Until so far the company has been
involved in several profitable jobs, mainly in the Middle East.
Speaking about reasons for founding of such a company, Guri said in one of his
interviews: ‘We came to an idea to open a branch office in Belgrade. I think that is going
to be good both for our country and our people presently without job. We can train and
prepare them so that they can earn for living’. At company’s branch office in Belgrade
‘Blic’ was confirmed that the basic idea at founding of the firm was dealing with security
jobs in crisis areas. ‘We have made numerous contacts with American and British
companies in order to be able to appear in security market as producers. However, we are
still in the phase of negotiations’, Zeljko Cvetkovic, ‘Sectracon’ president in Belgrade
said.
BOX 2:
Good Earning
Jobs in Iraq are divided into those within private companies and those under patronage of
American and British Governments. Your salary depends on your boss, but also
conditions you should fulfil to get a job.
Private Sector: In majority of cases the number of operatives is minimal, available assets
are very limited. One of the most dangerous and at the same time the least paid jobs is
convoy escorting. Minimal army or police experience is required as well as manipulation
with infantry arms and minimal knowledge of English. War experience is desirable
/although not decisive/. The monthly salaries are from 4,000 to 8,000 Dollars. Our people
mainly work in this sector.
State Sector: Most frequently it is protection of American generals, ambassadors and
highly positioned diplomatic workers. Every operative is being cared for almost equally
as the individuals that an operative is protecting. A lot is invested in their advanced
training. The monthly payments are ranging from 15,000 to 30,000. To get this job, one
must have intensive experience in security and anti-terrorist operations, previous
connections with special units, special training and skills and knowledge of several
languages.
Research carried out with the help of SCOOP Program of the Danish Association of
Investigative Journalists‘We can make no promise to them’, the organizers say in one voice.for Europe visited Serbia, a source having reliable knowledge of security structures reveals for ‘Blic’.
